Tattoo numbing creams are topical anaesthetics designed to desensitise the skin before tattooing. Most products contain active ingredients such as lidocaine, benzocaine, or tetracaine, which work by temporarily blocking nerve signals in the skin. This helps reduce discomfort from the tattoo needle while still allowing your artist to work as usual.

While numbing cream doesn’t completely eliminate sensation, it can make a huge difference, especially for long sessions or tattoos placed on areas like the ribs, ankles, or spine.

If you plan to use numbing cream before your tattoo, following the correct application process is key. Here’s how we recommend doing it safely:

Choose the right cream. Use a trusted, high-quality numbing cream that’s designed specifically for tattoos or cosmetic procedures. Avoid cheap or unverified brands, as some may contain harsh ingredients or cause skin irritation. If you’re unsure, you can ask your tattoo artist or Quiet Ink Studio for a recommendation.

Clean the area thoroughly. Wash the skin where you’ll get tattooed with mild soap and warm water to remove dirt, oil, and residue. Pat dry with a clean towel. Clean skin helps the numbing cream absorb better and work more effectively.

Apply a generous layer. Squeeze out enough cream to cover the area with a thick layer—around 1–2mm thick. Don’t rub it in; just spread it evenly over the skin.

Cover with plastic wrap. Once applied, cover the area with plastic wrap (cling film). This helps trap the cream’s active ingredients and allows them to penetrate the skin more deeply. Keep the area covered for 45 minutes to 1 hour before your tattoo session.

Remove and clean before tattooing. When it’s time to start, gently wipe off the numbing cream with a damp cloth or paper towel. Your artist will clean the area again with an antiseptic solution before tattooing begins.

Stay still and relaxed. Once the tattooing starts, the numbing effect should last between 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the product and your skin type. Try to stay relaxed—stress or movement can affect circulation and reduce how long the cream lasts.

While numbing cream can be a great help, it’s not for everyone. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Always patch test first. Apply a small amount to your skin 24 hours before your tattoo to check for allergic reactions.

Don’t overuse it. Applying too much cream or leaving it on for too long can cause side effects like redness, swelling, or temporary numbness beyond the target area.
